IN OLD SPLENDORA

Downtown Splendora in 1946 - 1947 had the same layout it has today , it began at the corner of Old Hwy 59 and FM 2090 . On the corner was the service station run by Pud Daw and his brother Cooter . They offered full service gas , windshield cleaning with a real chamois , check oil , tires and requests . The mechanic most of the time was Sidney Davis , father of Mark . Connected to the service station building was the cafe , at that time operated by Bertie Collins , who was one of the best cooks ever in these parts . I have a cook book of her recipes assembled before she died , but I can't make them taste like she did . For a copy contact Alba Coleman or Wanna Thornton or their kids . Two of the waitresses were Alba and Wanna . She served home cooked meals , hamburgers , chili and other cafe staples . Next , approximately where Archies is was the two story frame hotel/boarding house owned by Lee Burrow . Next was a building that had a movie theater operated by Wilbur Lee Burrow . The movies were mostly " B " westerns and Laurel and Hardy films in black and white . One time I remember a Grand Ol' Opry show with Roy Acuff , Minnie Pearl and comedian Rod Brasfield made an appearance there . Next was Lee Burrow's grocery and feed store . It was not usually self service , you came in with your list and gave it to Fred , Lee's brother or his wife Oma ( ? ) . They proceeded to fill your order and put your items in a cardboard box . There were not many cash transactions , most people had an account that they paid when they got paid . Lee did not sell meats , that involved a trip to Cleveland to either Dishongh's or Rhoden's . Most people back then rarely bought meats , they killed their hogs and cured their bacon and hams and salt pork . If they could they raised a steer and took it to a locker plant where it was killed and cut into steaks , roasts and hamburger . A locker plant would package and freeze the meats and keep it in a locker for you since most people did not have a freezer . People who lived along Daw Collins did not have electricity until 1950 . Last of the stores in Splendora was Mr . Sallee's dry goods store , that sold cloth and sundries for sewing . Most ladies made their own dresses and only bought a Sunday Go To Meeting ( Church and funeral ) dress . Flour in 25 and 50 pound bags and some animal feeds came in print cloth sacks . Those made everyday dresses and boy's shirts . Most men wore overalls and khaki or blue work shirts . That was Old Splendora downtown , no police station , no fire station no mayor or city council . TALES FROM TALLOW FLAT

THESSE ARE STORIES FROM MY CHILDHOOD UP UNTIL 1994 WHEN THEY WERE PUBLISHED AS A SERIES IN THE HUMBLE SUN . I WAS BORN IN THE AREA KNOWN AS TALLOW FLAT WHICH RUNS ROUGHLY FROM MORGAN CEMETERY RD ALONG DAW COLLINS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF FM 2090 . BEFORE CLEAR CUTTING OF MOST OF THE TIMBER IT WAS THE MAIN DRAINAGE FROM THE HIGHER GROUND WHERE DAW COLLINS AND MORGAN CEMETERY MEET . A FLAT BECAUSE OF THE WATER IS USUALLY FREER OF UNDERBRUSH THAN THE HAMMOCKS ON EITHER SIDE . NOW THEY ARE MOSTLY GONE BECAUSE OF CLEAR CUTTING AND HOMES BEING BUILT . IN MY CHILDHOOD WHEN WE HAD AN ESPECIALLY WET WINTER THE WATER FLOWED DOWN THE FLATS LIKE A RIVER . MOST OF THE TREES THAT GREW IN FLATS WERE PIN OAK OR WATER OAK AND THEY WERE PRIME SQUIRREL HUNTING AND THE BEST DEER STANDS BECAUSE OF THE VISIBILITY . ALSO , THEY WERE THE BEST PLACES TO PICK UP PINE KNOTS FOR KINDLING . PINE KNOTS ARE REMNANTS OF THE HUGE PINES THAT WERE CUT MANY YEARS BEFORE AND AS THE OUTER WOOD ROTTED AWAY THE RICH IN TURPENTINE HEARTS WERE LEFT , ALMOST IMPERVIOUS TO ROT AND A FEW CHIPS OR SPLINTERS WOULD BURN QUICKLY AND HOT TO START THE OAK WOODS USED FOR HEAT QUICKLY . MY DAD WOULD HOOK OL' ALEC , FEATURED IN A COUPLE OF STORIES , TO THE SLIDE AND WE WOULD LOAD IT WITH PINE KNOTS TO HAVE PLENTY OF KINDLING TO START FIRES IN HEATERS AND STOVES . THERE WERE ALSO NATURAL PONDS HWERE DUCKS WOULD FIND AN ABUNDANCE OF ACORNS AND OTHER FOODS , USING THE PONDS AS REST STOPS ON THEIR WAY SOUTH IN THE WINTER . A FEW OF THE PONDS HELD WATER IN HOLES EVEN IN THE DRIEST SUMMERS AND PROVIDED WATER FOR THE LIVESTOCK AND WILD ANIMALS THAT LIVED IN THE WOODS . CLEAR CUTTING OF TIMBER HAS DESTOYED MOST OF THOSE . IN THOSE DAYS THE LAND WAS OWNED BY LARGE TIMBER COMPANIES AND THEY ALLOWED ANYONE TO HUNT , FISH OR JUST WANDER THROUGH THE WOODS AS I DID . AS LONG AS YOU DID NOT DAMAGE PINE TREES , THE MONEY CROP , YOU WERE WELOCOME . DEER HAD BECOME SO FEW THAT IN THE 1930'S DEER HUNTING HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR 20 YEARS . THEY STARTED MAKING A COMEBACK IN THE 1960'S WITH STOCKING AND DEER MOVING NORTH FROM THE GROWING DEVELOPMENT OF KINGWOOD'S 50,000 ACRES . IN THE 1970'S THEY INCREASED TO THE POINT THAT THEY BECAME PESTS FOR CROPS AND THEY STILL ARE TODAY EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE WOODS ARE GONE . I LIVE ON LAND THAT MY GRANDFATHER BOUGHT IN 1911 FOR $ 5.00 AN ACRE . MY GREAT GRANDFATHER COLLINS SETTLED ALONG WHAT IS NOW MORGAN CEMETERY RD IN THE 1870S AND MORGAN CEMETERY IS NAMED AFTER MY MY GREAT AUNT'S HUSBAND ON LAND SHE INHERITED . AT ONE TIME EVERYONE WHO LIVED ALONG THE ROAD AS FAR AS THE CEMETERY WAS RELATED TO ME . WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME WHY I WANT TO LIVE IN AN AREA THAT IS STILL ISOLATED , 5 MILESS TO THE NEAREST CONVENIENCE STORE , NO CABLE TV , IT IS STILL MOSTLY QUIET AND PEACEFUL AND I LIVE AMONG PEOPLE I HAVE KNOWN MY WHOLE LIFE . THIS IS WHERE MY ROOTS ARE AND I AM SURROUNDED BY MEMORIES OF THE PEOPLE I LOVED . I LIVED IN HOUSTON FOR 30 SOME ODD YEARS , I DON'T NEED THAT ANYMORE , I'LL TAKE TALLOW FLAT .

Did you know that in that Fiscal Cliff B.S. was Obama's payback for Hollywood big money donations ? $ 430 million to make movies in the US . She was one of seven members of the Congressional Black Caucus that were being investigated for ethics violations for her insider votes to help a bank that her husband had a major interest in . He made a large sum of money with her help but like most CBC members she was forgiven for her transgressions . She still carries on with her racist tirades , white people are devils , a female Black Panther . Lovely woman whose picture is worn as a mask for Halloween in the ghetto she represents . She watches out for the " vunnables " , her pronunciation for vulnerables , the poor and downtrodden which includes most of her district that is 90 % black . She is known for her mistreatment of her staffers , even worse than Michelle . Besides treating them with disdain and freely using the " n " word she demands queenly treatment . Her ignorance knows no bounds , often taking to the floor to exhibit her stupidity and being a general embarrassment to Texas and Congress . She has become very wealthy using insider information available to Congress but not to the general public . She blocked minimum wage from extending to American Samoa where she and her husband own a fish cannery , it would have made less profit by paying the Samoans minimum wage . MICHAEL FURMAN : Re your statement that I resent strong liberal women when I said they are mostly ugly witches ( can substitute " b " ) . Let's start with number one Big Moo : The liberal media proclaim how fashionable and attractive she is . A $ 10,000 dress does does not lessen her 2 axe handles wide butt or a face that only Rosie O'Donnell could call attractive . She had , at last count , 38 assistants , most First Ladies have had 2 to 5 , at a salary average of $ 100,000 plus . Reportedly she is queen like in her treatment of them and treats them like serfs . She put our kids on food in school lunches that fill all the trash cans with uneaten portions and receive complaints galore . Her character is not above reproach , she held a " no show " that paid more than $ 300,000 at a hospital in Chicago where her main function was sending Medicaid patients to a substandard charity facility . Her law license was revoked in CHICAGO where crime and politicians run rampant over the law . The records are sealed as to why it was revoked but normally it would take malfeasance with client funds or theft or fraud of a large magnitude . Also , her husband had his license revoked , again the records are sealed . That is the number one liberal woman , to be continued .

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) defended entitlements in her House speech Wednesday, saying that they are not "handouts" but are "earned." Sheila shows her dumbass again . "I believe it should be pronounced here today, that the reform of the entitlements based upon slipshod, reckless, deliberations or should I say actions are a non-starter. There is no way, Mr. Speaker, that we should raise the eligability age for Medicare, that we should not think carefully about how we approach the reform of Medicaid. And that we don't the American people that Social Security is solvent. So, I would say move quickly to pass the middle class tax cuts that would be for all Americans, 100 % up to 250,000 dollars. And let’s think about moving into 2013, how we make this economy better by looking carefully at how we reform entitlements that are not handouts but they are earned.

How are you Obama voters enjoying your tax cuts ? Oh , he forgot to tell you about the 2 % increase , no big deal $ 1000 to $ 2000 yearly . Stay cool , it will get worse . Pelosi wants more revenue , governmentese for tax hikes . How is your employee health insurance doing ? Premium increase yet ? It's coming . Nancy wants to tax the premium paid by your employer as a benefit . This is only the beginning .

THE REAL TEA PARTY If all you know about the Tea Party comes from liberal media and Democrats you would think they are wild right wing radicals , racist dinosaurs . They praise the filthy , defecating on police cars Occupy Movement who destroy property and leave tons of trash . The Tea Party is composed of average blue collar and white collar Americans who appreciate the values that built America and made iy great . They believe in opportunity for everyone regardless of race . They do not feel we need the nanny state to tell us what to feed our kids , put unnecessary regulations on what we can drink or eat , have to register our guns with an oppressive government keeping track for suppression purposes . In other words the government should do what the Constitution says and no more . No unfair taxes on ordinary citizens when corporate friends of the President and his party who make big donations are given tax breaks and taxpayer money to invest in losing ventures , i.e. Green Energy , that are really paybacks or bribes for future donations . An able bodied person on welfare should not receive more in benefits than they would working and all welfare recipients should be randomly tested for drug use , There is so much hatred directed at the Tea Party by the media and the leftist loons like Pelosi and Maxine Waters and practically all Dims . They want a return to American values that made us great , not slavery or racial suppression , equal opportunity for everyone and a fair tax system meaning TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY , spend our money wisely .

He has destroyed the middle class economy with his EPA , ridiculous rules and regulations , Obamacare and all its hidden taxes that will destroy even more jobs , forcing employers to lay off workers because they can not survive the increased expenses they will be forced to pay . And who enforces Obamacare , 16 , 500 new IRS agents plus untold thousands of new government workers . The size of government continues to grow and the middle class jobs decline . The phony unemployment figures are another example of the lies perpetuated to fool the gullible public . At least 3 million workers have given up looking for work and are not counted , millions more have taken jobs with much lower pay than before to try to survive . The real unemployment and underemployment is around 15 % . His first four years increased food stamp recipients by 15 million , poverty levels have increased to 1/7 of Americans and he has created his own voting bloc of welfare slaves . They have free or low cost housing , food stamps , higher welfare payments if they have more children ( 70 % without known fathers ) , obamaphones , free internet , free medical care all reducing the incentives to look for work , which he stopped as a requirement . With all these allotments he has created a permanent welfare class which is basically enslaved to vote Democrat or else . This is a small part of his legacy created in his first term , more of the crony capitalism rewarding his friends and high dollar donors and punishing his enemies to be examined later plus scandals , indictable and impeachable offenses , murders of Americans at Benghazi and because of Fast and Furious . The legacy ignored by the liberal media who promote his greatness .
